Library Media Specialist

Location: Fort Howard Elementary School

Description:
Fort Howard Elementary is pleased to announce a part-time (50%) Library Media Specialist vacancy. The successful candidate for this position plans, organizes and provides instruction for both faculty and students, in order to effectively support the total school program. Wisconsin DPI library media (LMS) certification is required; candidates who have enrolled in a program leading toward LMS certification may be considered.

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to:
1. Develops instruction and programs that are responsive to diverse learning styles, cultural influence and cognitive development of all learners.
2. Develops lesson plans, as appropriate; to provide for a sequential program of library/media instruction to support and implement the District curriculum.
3. Orients students and staff to library/media resources, policies and procedures.
4. Provides instruction in library/media skills, ans use of reference processes to exchange ideas, develop and share new understanding, and reflect on their learning.
5. Assists students with independent study and interests.
6. Guides reference and research work of small and large groups.
7. Works with teachers to incorporate library/media resources into classroom activities.
8. Provides classroom presentations in the use of multimedia resources.
9. Produces bibliographies of new materials received in the library/media center.
10. Routes new library/media center acquisitions of particular interest to staff members.
11. Cooperates with the District Library/Media Coordinator and administrative chairperson to assure coordination and continuity of the library/media skills program.
12. Cooperates with area school media centers and public libraries to provide information on assignments; and encourages sharing of materials and services at the local level.
13. Coordinates, maintains and implements technology programs and equipment in the library/media center.
14. Provides equitable access to appropriate and diverse resources to extend learning locally and globally, throughout the day and beyond.
15. Promotes, encourages and supports reading as a path to individual learning and deeper understanding of the world.
16. Creates and maintains a library/media center environment that is conductive to learning.
17. Displays motivational materials; such as, book displays, promotional materials and bulletin boards.
18. Disciplines in a dignified, fair and positive manner, striving toward student self-control.
19. Establishes an attitude of mutual respect and tolerance.
20. Displays a thorough knowledge of and enthusiasm for the operation and control of the library/media center.
21. Encourages students to develop skills of self-reliance, inquiry and self-motivation through activities, programs and multimedia usage.
22. Creates a flexible environment where both independent and collaborative learning is valued, promoted and encouraged.
23. Is responsive and respectful of cultural, physical, intellectual, and emotional differences of learners, providing resources and services to meet all users needs.
24. Utilizes effective library/media center management procedures, selection procedures and organizational procedures to provide suitable materials to meet the individual needs of students, staff and District adopted curriculum.
25. Maintains a balanced, current collection of library/media materials covering varying viewpoints of an issue and portraying all races and creeds.
26. Provides opportunities for all students to experience success regularly through the use of the library/media center.
27. Selects library/media materials in accordance with Common School Fund guidelines, the District selection policy and curriculum needs.
28. Enlists faculty assistance when selecting and evaluating library/media materials.
29. Classifies and catalogs instructional resources when not pre-processed.
30. Reviews, inventories and updates the library/media materials collection to keep the instructional materials current.
31. Keeps accurate inventory and assists in circulation of textbooks, technology equipment and mobile devices.
31. Establishes with teachers procedures for assignments involving the use of library/media resources.
33. Promotes the use of professional library/media resources.
34. Provides quick reference and in-depth research assistance to students, faculty and administrators.
35. Is involved with curriculum implementation through the selection of instructional materials, the infusion of technology and the design of classroom activities with teachers through flexible scheduling.
36. Makes available the facilities and equipment for access to information sources.
37. Compiles and submits required reports promptly, legibly, and accurately.
38. All other duties as assigned.
