Shannon County is one of the two unorganized counties in the State of South Dakota. The two unorganized counties encompass two-thirds of the land area of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Ninety-five percent of the students are transported to and from the schools named above by bus.
Approximately ninety-seven percent of the students attending Shannon county Schools are enrolled members of the Oglala Sioux Indian Tribe and live in small geographically isolated communities (6 persons per square mile.)
