The Promise Academy will begin with 100 kindergartners and 100 sixth graders, adding an additional two grades each year. By the 2010-2011 school year, the Promise Academy will run from kindergarten through 12th grade and will have an enrollment of 1,300 students. The school will be open to any child in a New York City public school.
The middle and high school students will be housed in our new building at 125th Street and Madison Avenue. The elementary and primary grades will be in a local elementary school.
Geoffrey Canada, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harlem Children's Zone, Inc., said, “The Promise Academy will complete our ability to provide a real opportunity for city kids to receive, and benefit from, a quality education.”
The school will have small class sizes, extended school hours, a free after-school program, and provide access to a range of support services, including medical and dental services, counseling, parenting classes and computer training.
