SALARY and BENEFITS: Grade 17. Range begins with Step 1 = $12.57 per hour. 6.00 hours per day, 181 days per year with benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement. Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits and personal leave. A new classified employee may receive up to a maximum of five (5) years of previous outside work experience. The prior position must be similar in nature and written verification of employment from the previous employer must be submitted to Human Resources upon employment. Per Administrative Regulation No. 311.1.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent. A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in basic instructional techniques, or a closely related field; and entry-level experience performing the work of a Para Professional within a regular classroom setting; or experience at or equivalent to experience as a Para Professional I for the Carson City School District, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below. Must have an Associateís Degree or completion of two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (verified by official transcript) or pass the state-approved academic proficiency test (Para Professional Assessment). All applicants must meet all highly qualified requirements pursuant to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) regulations. Bilingual preferred.

Must be able to pass the pre-employment drug screen test.

This is a new position.

General Job Description:

Under supervision, to assist teachers in classroom operations; to instruct regularly placed students individually and in small groups; to instruct ELL and special education students having moderate disabilities; working with students that may require special programs that are not yet diagnosed; attend appropriate work related trainings; and to perform clerical duties and related work as required.

Experience or training required:

Knowledge of: General needs and behavior of children; elementary concepts of child development and of behavior characteristics; reading and writing in English; number concepts; record keeping techniques; operation of basic office equipment including computers; basic first aid.

Ability to: Communicate with students and motivate them to participate in learning activities; learn to teach in special subject matter areas or to teach students who have special learning needs by watching teachers or specialists; learn and adapt to new procedures and conditions; apply knowledge and practices with judgment; recognize hazards to safety; learn laws, rules, practices and procedures related to public education and related to the program to which assigned that is provided by the Carson City School District; perform routine clerical work; supervise students in the classroom and outdoors; perform basic first aid, as needed; maintain routine records; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; establish and maintain effective proactive relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Any combination of training, education, and experience, which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Licenses or Certificates required:
Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate, a valid driverís license issued by the state of residence, and an original Social Security Card. Possession of a current first aid certificate may be required.

The Job Functions:
Positions in this class are established principally to assist teachers in a regular kindergarten classroom; to relieve teachers of certain instructional tasks; to provide close attention to ELL and special education students having emotional or other interruptive learning problems including dyslexia and hyperactivity. Students are limited in number and display learning disabilities that require individual attention within a normal classroom setting. Incumbent typically assists students with individualized or small group and programmed materials concentrating on emotional and academic development. Incumbent is not required to be with the students throughout the day. Provide routine details, which are non-instructional in nature. This class is distinguished from that of Para Professional I by the addition of students participating in ELL and special learning programs in a normal classroom setting and distinguished from the next higher class of Para Professional III, by the lack of students having severe and varied developmental problems such as Down Syndrome, Epilepsy and Cerebral Palsy.

Essential Job Functions:
Work with students individually or in small groups to tutor, reinforce or follow-up on learning activities; assist by guiding students or by providing an example in a variety of areas such as communication, computation, self-control and cooperation; help students to learn how to sequence tasks, in accordance with established guidelines; use teacherís methods as a pattern to individualize instruction by matching instruction to needs of each learner; supervise classroom and outdoor playground activities to direct students into safe activities and relationships; help students to relate to individuals and groups who are not in a special education program; assist students to be self-reliant; use computer to produce materials and prepare masters, operate various office equipment; prepare projects; give instructions in how to play games; administer basic first aid; perform incidental housekeeping tasks, such as cleaning work areas; help students learn normal oral speech patterns by helping them produce sounds, words and sentences; help students learn to be aware of their personal appearance and how to take care of personal needs; maintain a Rewards Room; supervise students on field trips; test and informally assess student; explain playground rules; listen to students read; assist students to learn address, telephone numbers and other necessities; put up bulletin board displays; type communication to parents as advised by teacher, as well as other materials; and perform related work as required.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Strength: Light Work - Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 25 pounds maximum.
