Rockingham County Schools is comprised of 25 schools with more than 14,500 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through 12.
Sixteen schools serve elementary age students. Four middle schools (grades 6-8) feed into the county’s four high school(grades 9-12). An aggressive expansion and building renovation plan has resulted in three new schools since 1996 and plans are underway to construct four more by 2005.
Seven campuses, six elementary and one middle, serve traditional and year-round calendar students in all of the county’s attendance zones.
Student achievement continues to increase in Rockingham County. More than 90 percent of Rockingham County’s schools met or exceeded state testing requirements and none have been low performing for the past two years.
More than 75 percent of Rockingham County’s students in grades 3-8 are achieving at or above grade level in reading and math. Students pro-moted to the next grade achieved growth at a rate of 7 percent to 20 percent.
Almost 80 percent of Rockingham County’s graduating class of 1999 said they plan to attend a community/technical college or a four-year university. More than $1.6 million in scholarships was awarded to graduates from the county’s four high schools in 1998-99.
Across the state, Rockingham County is known for its JobReady program, which promotes career awareness, exploration and preparation activities for students in grades K-12. The Exceptional Children program is recognized as a model for inclusion practices in the classroom.
Strong partnerships with agencies and business are helping the school system expand its services for children across the spec-trum. Pre-school services are being expanded through collaborative efforts between the system and the Rockingham County Partnership for Children. Before and after-school child care is offered both in-house and through partnerships with the local YMCAs.
