EXTENDED DAY KINDERGARTEN

The district offers Extended Day Kindergarten at all elementary buildings. Parents can contact the building principal at their elementary school of choice. The curriculum is literacy-based and designed to improve the child’s language and reading skills.

HANDLEY SCHOOL

Handley School’s Program for the Creative and Academically Talented (PCAT) is designed to meet the special educational needs of academically talented students throughout the region in grades kindergarten though five. Students study at an accelerated pace with special emphasis placed on math, science, writing, critical thinking and the arts. For more information contact Handley School at 399-4250.

SAGINAW ARTS & SCIENCES ACADEMY

The Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy offers a full-day middle school and high school option for gifted/talented students throughout the Tri-Cities region. SASA provides high quality academic and arts education to students in grades 6-12. For more information, call 399-5500.

SAGINAW CAREER COMPLEX

High school juniors and seniors can obtain practical, hands-on career and technical education, including work based learning experiences, through the 21 programs offered at the Saginaw Career Complex. Students meet for two hours and fifty minutes daily. Coursework, in programs ranging from business technology and medical careers to chemical processing and engineering/computer drafting, is designed to prepare students for rewarding careers and higher education. ARTHUR EDDY K-8 ACADEMY

The Arthur Eddy K-8 Academy is designed around the MicroSociety® concept, which brings learning to life for students by putting them in a real, functioning mini community. The Eddy MicroSociety® contains markets, business ventures, government agencies, and cultural organizations, all of which are created and operated by students. Classroom learning is linked to real world situations. As a magnet school, the Arthur Eddy Academy is open to students in grades kindergarten through 8 throughout Saginaw County and beyond. ZILWAUKEE K-8 SCHOOL

Zilwaukee is a full-service school for students in grades Pre-K through 8 that is focused on excellence in academics. The school has a dynamic staff of 22 certified teachers, the majority of whom have advanced degrees. The staff is geared to meet each child’s academic and socio-emotional needs in a community-based setting. For more information, call 399-5200.

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

The district offers Before the Bell and After the Bell programs at a very low cost in ALL elementary schools, which means the schools will be open for children from 7:00 a.m. until as late as 6:30 p.m. The programs provide children of working parents with a positive environment that include wholesome academic, recreational and social opportunities. BIRTH THROUGH 12 READING INITIATIVE

A targeted, high quality and consistent reading instruction program is designed to ensure that all students become proficient readers. This initiative includes early intervention with families and infants and continues through elementary, middle and high school. Concentrated daily reading blocks, increased professional training, before and after school tutoring and increased emphasis on reading in all areas of the curriculum are important parts of this effort.

ART, MUSIC, PHYSICAL EDUCATION

A full program of Art, Music and Physical Education is available in grades K-5. The district’s middle school and high school programs produce outstanding artists, musicians and athletes.

YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM

The Youth Sports Program is designed to provide elementary and middle school
students with the opportunity to learn the fundamental rules of the sport, improve their skills and coordination, experience team play while encouraging school spirit and pride, and to master the basics of good sportsmanship. The following sports are offered: touch football, girls and boys basketball, floor hockey, soccer, and softball.

BIRTH THROUGH FIVE PROGRAM

The district’s Birth Through Five Educational Program provides families within the School District of the City of Saginaw with information, resources and networking to help them with their children’s development and school readiness. For more information call 399-6850.

TECHNOLOGY EXPANSION

The district continues to make a substantial investment in technology. The district’s ambitious technology plan is designed to increase student access to information and ideas and to provide them with the best and most up to date equipment.

LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTERS

All elementary, middle and high school Library/Media Centers are equipped to provide students with instant, computerized access to district library collections as well as the collections housed at all area public libraries. Students have Internet access to a world-wide web of learning resources and individual email accounts.

CAREER PATHWAYS

All students will graduate from the Saginaw Public Schools with educational experiences that will prepare them for post-high school learning and employment. From early elementary career awareness to middle school career exploration to high school career majors and work-based learning, Career Pathways programs provide all students with the background, knowledge and experiences that will enable them to graduate with the skills they need for success. All students will be challenged to meet rigorous career and academic preparation standards. All seniors will be required to complete a senior project based on their career path.
