About Springfield Public Schools

The Springfield Public Schools employ approximately 2,650 teachers, who are represented by the Springfield Education Association, an affiliate of the National Education Association. The district supports an especially strong professional development program (see below), as well as opportunities to attend academic workshops and conferences.

The Springfield School District is committed to continuous improvement for all students, faculty, and administrators. This commitment is detailed in a comprehensive action plan entitled Building a Culture of Achievement, the goals of which are to maximize student learning, maximize adult learning, and maximize the support services necessary for achievement to occur.

Springfield supports teachers by offering a wide array of special programs and services for
professional growth, including:
- Mentor program for beginning teachers that includes district and school-based support
- Website and a monthly newsletter devoted to supporting beginning teachers
- No-cost, DOE-approved local licensure programs for teachers seeking Initial licensure, and for teachers seeking Initial licensure as principal/assistant principals
- The services of two full-time licensure mentors who guide teachers through licensure and license renewal processes
- Paid workshop opportunities that are content-specific and provide professional
development points
- Structured opportunities for teachers to become teacher leaders
- Opportunities for salary advancement
- School to Community Initiative for Proficiency (Step Up Springfield)
