The St. Tammany Parish Public School System provides a caring environment for learning, a challenging and relevant curriculum, innovative instruction and solid student achievement. Constant commitment to improvement and to high performance has made the System a leader in the State of Louisiana, by all major standards of educational excellence.
St. Tammany Parish (county) has ranked as one of the fastest growing counties in the United States during the past decade.
The family atmosphere, clean environment and strong, community-supported public school system attract newcomers to the area from all parts of the country. The diversity of natives and newcomers keeps schools dynamic and expands learning opportunities for students.
Schools and Curriculum
The School System consists of 52 schools. In addition to the core curriculum, St. Tammany public schools offer a variety of electives, enrichment and extracurricular activities. School personnel at all schools have the latitude to add or design particular programs and activities to serve the specific needs of their students.
Making education relevant for all students is a primary aim of the System. The locally developed curriculum is based on State-mandated standards and benchmarks for learning for every grade level and subject area. These standards and benchmarks were developed with input from educators, parents, and business/civic leaders across the state to identify the knowledge students are expected to learn and be able to apply.
Graduates are being prepared to continue their education or to enter the workforce immediately. Numerous alternative programs, as well as other innovative programs for the arts, gifted, talented, honors, advanced placement, R. O. T. C., study/internship and vocational studies, are offered.
Elementary education focuses strong attention on learning the foundation skills of reading, writing and mathematics. Early childhood programs for four-year-olds are provided at some schools.
Special education programs, including gifted and talented, are offered based on assessments of student need. Exceptional children and young people of ages 3 through 21 are served according to federal, state and local requirements.
St. Tammany Parish Public School System programs, students and employees are widely recognized throughout the Nation. Students continue to score above national and state levels on standardized tests used to measure student achievement. Outstanding students across the parish distinguish themselves in academics, the arts, citizenship, athletics and extracurricular activities. A majority of graduates choose to further their education and are accepted at colleges and universities throughout the country.
