Position Function: The social media and web specialist has an exciting opportunity to drive stakeholder engagement and support the district’s brand across all Wichita Public Schools web, social media and mobile properties, and will support district schools as they expand their audience engagement. The professional will be an active part of the news and media relations team, developing and writing stories for placement on social/web platforms as well as traditional outreach methods.

The successful candidate will enjoy a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and will have the ability to develop creative solutions, research and write engaging content and monitor progress. The position requires a passionate professional who is committed to developing and enhancing relationships that support Wichita students and schools, and positively representing the mission and values of the district.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:
- Develops strategies and maintain, coordinates and expands stakeholder engagement through the district’s social media and web presence
- Leverages and enhances integration of existing social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn) to tell the district’s story
- Supports news and media relations team with the development of news stories for placement both on social media/web platforms and other outreach methods (media relations, Outlook, etc.). This may include attending district and community events to support coverage of key stories.
- Strategically supports schools, and builds capacity, to manage their school web content by providing content support and targeted training
- Trains campus and department staff on how to best utilize web content management system, and elected social media tools, to provide helpful information to stakeholders, and drive school social engagement
- Manages multiple social media accounts to strategically support administrators and schools, and build capacity with targeted training
- Actively uses Twitter during Board of Education meetings to inform and engage stakeholders
- Monitors various social media venues (including media sites) for troubleshooting and awareness, and serves as a member of the division crisis team responsible for social media monitoring
- Continuously evaluates district web site content, and develops/executes strategies to enhance the timeliness and effectiveness of content
- Uses measurement tools including Google Analytics and platform metrics to evaluate existing work, recommend strategies to grow engagement on district platforms. Reports to the team on performance metrics on a regular basis
- Monitors and enhances district mobile application to support stakeholder access to information
- Works with the team to effectively develop and implement marketing campaigns and community engagement programs
- Monitors the district’s brand representation online, and where necessary, suggests strategies for overcoming negative representations
- Coordinates the master content calendar for the main district web site and social media channels
- Closely collaborates with news and media relations, community engagement teams
- Evaluates expansion of district interaction on other social media platform
- Maintains professional contacts and keeps abreast of current trends through participation in professional organizations
- Assists staff with various projects as needed and provide general office support

Additional Duties: Other duties and responsibilities as directed by the News and Media Relations Manager, Division Director of Marketing and Communications and the Superintendent.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, include a clear demonstration of tone and styles with platforms and audiences in mind. This includes but is not limited to writing for social media and web platforms, presentations and news stories.
- Excellent grammar and proofreading skills
- Strong understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest), how the various media connect, how they connect with other communication platforms/initiatives, and how WPS can best leverage them to enhance community engagement.
- Capable of working effectively and cooperatively (in-person, via social media, on the internet and on the phone) with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
- Proven project management skills with the ability to organize, prioritize, re-prioritize following interruption of work flow, problem solve and meet deadlines.
- Understanding of analytics for digital platforms (Google Analytics preferred) and SEO strategies.
- Demonstrate consistent work ethic and respect necessary to maintain a cooperative and cohesive work environment.
- Ability to teach others in order to build organizational capacity to effectively use social media and web resources to achieve organizational or school goals.
- Working knowledge of the Microsoft suite, design-specific software and video editing tools.
- Safeguard confidentiality of privileged information.
- Continuous upgrade of skills is expected.

Equipment: This position requires the ability to use iPads, tablets, and DSLR camera equipment in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers and scanners. Must always comply with Wichita Public Schools’ guidelines for equipment use.

Travel: Frequent travel within the school district is required.

Physical and Mental Demands:
- Perform several tasks during the same period of time.
- Work calmly during stressful situations.
- Work in standard office setting, which may involve standing or sitting for long periods, extended periods of visual focus/computer work, moderate noise levels.
- May walk for long distances.
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.

- Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors
- Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks
- Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy
- Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues
- Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:
- In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave
- Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator
- All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position

Qualification Profile:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field desired, though other educational backgrounds considered if experience and proven skill set is demonstrated.
- Extensive knowledge of social media and web-based communications including content creation, web site management (CMS), mobile app management, and monitoring and analytics.
- Proven research, writing and social media/web skills will be evidenced by samples of previous work.
