Geary County USD 475, Junction City, Ft. Riley, Grandview, and Milford, is a highly diverse school district offering educational offerings to Pre-K through Grade 12 students. This school district, sitting in rural North Central Kansas, has a student population of 6500, of which 48% are non-white. Approximately 50 % of the students have at least one parent on active duty in the U.S. Army and another 10% have one or more parents who are retired military. Almost 55% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. Geary County USD 475 is a school district regionally and nationally known for its continuous improvement model and its staff development program for teachers and administrators. The Board of Education is made up of seven elected members who have four year terms and are elected at-large from the school district. In addition, the Commanding General at Fort Riley appoints a General Command Officer to act as a liaison between the school district and Ft. Riley. The liaison position is highly involved in determining policy direction for students and staff, but has not voting status as required by State of Kansas law. There are 13 elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, and an alternative school. Five of the elementary schools and one of the middle schools are located on the Ft. Riley military reservation.
