Indianapolis Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the following position(s):

Science Teacher

Summary: The Newcomer Program Science Teacher works with English Learners (ELs) in developing English skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening while simultaneously teaching science content.

Education and Qualifications:
Bachelorís Degree

Indiana State Teacher's License with Endorsement in teaching English as a Second Language.

Must be highly qualified to teach middle school Science and Earth Space Science.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare daily lesson plans focusing on Indiana Science standards and the WIDA framework that are differentiated based on studentís English language proficiency level and Individual Learning Plan (ILP).

Instruct students using a sheltered instruction model.

Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students, including whole group, small-group or individual learning.

Administer frequent formal and informal assessments to monitor student learning and progress.

Assist in collecting and analyzing data for increasing student achievement.

Provide feedback on the correctness or incorrectness of in-class work to encourage student growth

Maintain a positive classroom learning environment and records/reports discipline concerns via student information system.

Enter daily student attendance on student information system.

Work towards building a positive self-image in English learners.

Help students view their culture and themselves with pride.

Establish and maintain communication with parents of students in the program.

Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.

Must be able to speak, read and write fluently in English and the target language.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Focuses on solving conflict, not blaming; Maintains confidentiality;

Shows respect and sensitivity for cultural differences. Treats others with respect and consideration regardless of their status or position. Gives and welcomes feedback.

Adapts to changes in the work environment; Manages competing demands; Able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events. Balances team and individual responsibilities

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, see and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
