Literacy Support Specialist

Location or Department: Associate Superintendent

Job Summary: The Literacy Support Specialist will serve as direct professional support for teachers in K-8, Preschool, and 7-12 buildings to assist in the implementation and maintenance of the initiatives within the Indianapolis Public Schools’ Comprehensive Literacy Plan. In some instances, this coach will work in and with multiple buildings to ensure the literacy plan initiatives are being implemented with fidelity. The TLSS will provide on-going professional development support directly aligned to district literacy initiatives. This specialist will also support teachers in analyzing, interpreting, and utilizing data to inform instructional decisions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates command of the major components of effective literacy instruction, including the balanced literacy framework
- Supports teachers in analyzing literacy data to enhance instructional practices
- Participates in regularly scheduled staff, district, regional and school level meetings as required
- Plans, schedules and conducts literacy-based meetings at school sites
- Helps teachers implement the literacy plan initiatives with fidelity
- Works collaboratively with building literacy coach to monitor and support implementation of literacy plan/strategies
- Develops and models mastery literacy block lesson plans in teacher classrooms
- Assists teachers in reflecting upon their literacy practice and implementation of initiatives to continually improve effectiveness
- Helps schools identify building-wide literacy trends and develop a plan to address the trends
- Designs a support plan for individual teacher needs based on classroom observations
- Collaborate with other district Teacher Literacy Support Specialists to troubleshoot and problem-solve implementation of literacy plan
- Serves as one of the main stakeholders in the overall implementation and communication of district-wide literacy plan Provides support to teachers in their classrooms through coaching, modeling and mentoring
- Meets regularly with principals to monitor and support literacy implementation and individual teacher needs
- Provides literacy training and support for all teachers as needed
- Participates in professional development opportunities to improve knowledge and skills
- Reports to the Literacy Coordinator
- Performs additional school support duties as necessary

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Education and Experience Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
- Must be deemed Highly Qualified in accordance with the Indiana Department of Education or their last state of employment
- Minimum of 3-5 years of successful classroom teaching experience and working with other teachers
- Previous instructional coaching experienced preferred Strong organizational and management skills
- Strong leadership abilities, particularly within a change process
- Knowledge and expertise in literacy as well as the framework of the balanced literacy block, with an emphasis on guided reading
- Experience in planning and facilitating professional development sessions either as a teacher or presenter
- Working knowledge of the Indiana Academic Standards/Indiana Common Core Standards
- Demonstrates high proficiency with writing and technology
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other professional staff members

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Indiana Teacher's license

Language Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to compose documents and tools for instructional use required. Thorough knowledge of grammatical rules, spelling, punctuation and formats required.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs and all other statistical measurement tools.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to utilize courtesy and tact when communicating with others to deliver clear and concise messages.
