The Illinois Mathematics and Science AcademyŽ is an internationally-recognized pioneering educational institution created by the State of Illinois to develop talent and leadership in mathematics, science and technology. IMSA's advanced residential college preparatory program enrolls 650 academically talented Illinois students in grades 10-12. Nearly 18,000 teachers and 34,000 students in Illinois and beyond have benefited from The Center@IMSA program of professional development and student enrichment. Background and Funding
The brainchild of physics Nobel Laureate Dr. Leon Lederman, IMSA was established in 1985 by former Governor James R. Thompson and the Illinois General Assembly to help the State meet its needs for highly skilled leaders and workers in mathematics, science, and technology. IMSA is an independent "state agency" governed by an appointed Board of Trustees. IMSA budget is part of the Illinois Board of higher Education system.
