Some say the county was named for a canyon of the Boise River, but others believe it was for the Snake River Canyon that is a boundary for the county. In the area's early history, John Reed's group were killed here in 1813 near the mouth of the Boise River. Later, the Ward Massacre occurred near Middleton. The Hudson's Bay Company established Fort Boise in 1834 near what is now Parma, but abandoned it in 1855. The second Fort Boise was built near the old one, but it also ceased to be used and went into decline. Little sign is left of either fort. The county was created on 7 March 1891 and Caldwell was named the first and only county seat.
