Norwalk Public Schools Info

The Norwalk Public School District is a vibrant educational community committed to standards of excellence in the classroom. In a highly diverse city of 83,000 on a scenic stretch of Long Island Sound, Norwalk’s 19 public schools serves 11,000 students who represent a rainbow of races, nationalities, religions and cultures.

A living classroom, the city extends from shoreline to wooded interiors, and encompasses a thriving business and retail center, as well as numerous cultural and historic landmarks. Classes regularly visit the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion, a painstakingly preserved 1800’s era mansion. The District also partners with the Maritime Aquarium, a marine museum equipped with shark and seal tanks and an IMAX theatre. The schools regularly collaborate with the Maritime Aquarium on several programs such as Maritime Magic, a 4-week summer program providing exploration and discovery of Long Island Sound and Norwalk Harbor.

The Maritime Magnet School Program, matches a diverse group of 3rd graders from 3 Connecticut school districts (Norwalk, Wilton, and New Canaan) to spend 2 days learning about each other as well as marine science and maritime culture.

An annual art show and science fair draws large numbers of visitors to see the outstanding work of our students.

An active parent community brings together thousands of volunteers into city schools for a variety of classroom-enhancing activities. A well-established link between business and schools attracts mentors from area corporations into schools to sponsor children and strengthen business-education ties.

The District offers a comprehensive academic, inter-scholastic, and extra-curricular program. The District also has an outstanding music program that regularly wins awards and regional competitions. String instrumental instruction is offered to interested students in grades 3-5. The secondary schools students may participate in band, chorus, and orchestra.

Silvermine Elementary School offers a dual language program, Mano-a-Mano, which is a K-5 English/Spanish language immersion program. The instructional model is 50% English and 50% Spanish in two classrooms at each grade level. Students spend half of the week in the English classroom and the other half in the Spanish classroom.

The Center for Global Studies, located at Brien McMahon, is an inter-district high school magnet program that serves as a school within a school. Center students, drawn from the city and surrounding school districts, choose Japanese, Chinese, or Middle East Studies as a concentration. Students attend language arts and social studies classes as part of the Center’s interdisciplinary World Language studies program. In 2005, one hundred percent of CGS seniors went on to attend college.

District graduates attend prestigious colleges and universities including *Brown University, *Cornell University, *Dartmouth, *Harvard University, New York University and Wesleyan.
