Mesa County Valley School District is seeking qualified applicant for the following position(s)

School Social Worker (substance abuse)

Location: Basil T Knight Center (BTK)

Consults and collaborates with administration, teachers, allied professionals, families, students and others to serve as a resource for addressing substance abuse and mental health issues for our students in a safe and accessible manner.

This position will work within each assigned school’s Health Team to roll out a variety of mental health related curriculum to every student in grades preK - 12 in District 51.

This position oversees the roll-out at assigned high school and middle schools teaching and coordinating the selected curricula.

Working in concert with the school administration and school Health Team members, the SSW will employ a wide variety of integrated evidenced-based practices to identify, target, and meet the needs of students.

SSW assists the school staff with understanding the purposes, best practices and options for counseling, replacement strategies, interventions and other care options.

The responsibilities of this position include an expectation of consultation and collaboration with school staff, allied professionals and families to identify and set priorities for service and functional outcome plans.

Other collaborative activities may include providing education as in-service and/or provide materials to school staff, parents and/or community members to enhance knowledge and functionality.

The SSW may also develop presentations for training of teachers, administrators, parents, and the community in a wide spectrum of substance abuse or youth mental health topics and educational issues.

Students are participating in pre and post-tests, relate to the mental health topics being taught, in order to measure needs and changes over time.

The SSW is responsible for assessing the curricula test data to identify youth that may need additional follow-up.

In addition, a student may be referred for assessment at any time and some students will self-identify drug, alcohol, tobacco abuse as well as reporting any number of mental health concerns.

Referral sources within the mental health community are accessed and a care coordination plan is developed for each individual.

Indicators of depression and/or suicidal ideation are referred to the appropriate health care partner, followed closely, and District supports are provided as needed/requested.

Position holds an expectation to include a portion of time spent with parents and staff to appropriately convey student assessment data information as appropriate and within established policies.

The School Social Worker may implement, monitor and modify interventions to maximize the student’s potential to achieve established goals.

Using multiple sources of data, analysis of results will be used to make recommendations to building staff concerning students daily and long term mental health interventions, goals, and plans.

In addition, the SSW provides students ways to build upon their individual strengths and offers them opportunities to participate in the planning and direction of their own learning experience.

SSW may also participate in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) meetings at the building level providing a technical expertise to teachers and building administrators.

SSW guides individual intervention and support plans in collaboration with teachers, the School Health Team, and outside service providers making adjustments as needed. In addition and as requested the LSSW conducts Functional Behavior Assessments and develops Behavior Intervention Plans for identified students.

Employee is expected to manage documentation of trainings, services provided and student intervention plans in designated software system(s).

Documentation requirements are guided by School District 51, federal and state laws, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

While daily case notes are used directly for the benefit of the student; they also provide for legal requirements, Colorado Department of Education (CDE) grantor requirements and are held to the professional standards established by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

Expectations include measuring, defining, and quantifying program effectiveness through analysis of data and observation.

A timely submission of all case notes, and reports will also document time spent working on and progression in accomplishing established Program goals.

As requested/required SSW will formulate and report service provision information and demographics to accommodate reporting needs and funding requirements.

Job Summary:
Working under the general direction of the Prevention Services Coordinator the Licensed School Social Worker (LSSW) with a Crisis and Substance Abuse focus is responsible for providing an array of trainings and curricula that advance the understanding of the emotional and social development of children, substance abuses, depression, mental health concerns including suicidal ideation.

SSW is a part of assigned school’s Health Team and works to coordinate and track services and intervention plans for identified students.

The School Social Worker strives to reflect the reciprocal nature of home, school, and community influences on student achievement and with consideration given to each student’s unique developmental and intrinsic qualities.

Minimum of Bachelor‘s Degree in education, social work or related field*

Minimum of two years’ prior experience in school environment, counseling and/or therapy.

*Acceptable demonstration of acceptable education and/or experience will be at the sole discretion of the District

Must have or be eligible for valid Colorado Department of Education License with School Social Worker endorsement
Valid Colorado driver’s license

Working Conditions:
193 days/year
