AHS College Counselor

Location: Aspen High School

Job Description:
Position: College Counselor & College & Career Discovery Teacher

Days: Teacher Contract 185 days with extended calendar

Report to: AHS Principal

College Counseling Responsibilities Include:
- Providing one-on-one college counseling to students and parents.
- Developing and presenting day and evening college information sessions to all grade levels and parents.
- Providing evening application work sessions with seniors once a week from Sept-Dec.
- Writing recommendation letters for half the senior class and occasional juniors applying for summer programs.
- Assisting with the organization, operations and responsibilities associated with the Western Slope College Fair.
- Coordinating and presenting local scholarship awards and yearly spring ceremony.
- Collaborating with co-counselor to instruct the Parent-Led College Tour Experiential Education Course.
- Managing the College Counseling budget and the purchasing needs of the office.
- Facilitating visits and developing relationships with college admissions representatives.
- Presenting college book award winners at academic awards ceremony.
- Attending and supporting graduation ceremonies.
- Attending weekly committee meetings with counseling, college counseling, student services, and leadership.
- Helping advise Director of Curriculum regarding School Profile.
- Cooperating with team to manage the office budget and track expenses.
- Participating in professional development to maintain knowledge of industry.
- Preparing and editing written communication with students, parents and staff.
- Tracking of admission decisions, statistics, and submitting reports to the superintendent of schools or his designee

College & Career Discovery Teacher Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with co-counselor to instruct students in daily classroom lessons focusing on college knowledge and application preparation and self-discovery and career exploration.
- Support the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills, the exploration of ideas and the development of leadership qualities.
- Arranging and scheduling speakers and tutors for class.
- Assessing student progress and ongoing improvement through grading and projects.
- Working with cross-departmental, administrative, and/or grade level teams to develop goals for improving student achievement for students with support services.
- Meeting with families during parent/teacher conferences.

- Counsel students and families using differentiated strategies appropriate to the student and their circumstances and abilities.
- Manage oneself (be organized, prepared, and punctual; manage resources; meet deadlines; follow through on commitments; demonstrate appropriate physical appearance) in a manner that enhances the school community.
- Act in ways that directly support the mission of Aspen High School and the Aspen School District.
- Use clear verbal and written communication and active listening skills.
- Develop and maintain rapport and effective relationships with colleagues, adolescents and adults in carrying out duties and responsibilities by using courtesy, diplomacy, collaboration, cooperation, and professional conduct.
- Contribute to the goals and success of all teams and team members through leadership, critical thinking, flexibility in team discussions, and decision-making.
- Maintain high ethical standards, legal responsibility, and confidentiality.

- Masters Degree required
- Minimum 5 years of experience in college counseling and/or college admissions preferred
