Job Description: Aspen School District seeks School Social Worker for 2017-18 school year beginning immediately.

Reports To: Assistant Superintendent

Position Summary: The School Health Professional (SHP) Social Worker primary responsibilities would be to work directly with students and staff at grades PreK-8 (and with some contact at grades 9-12) to support five (5) key competencies (promising practices) that will contribute to positive: Self-awareness; Self-management; Social awareness; Relationship skills and Responsible decision making.

Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in social work minimum, masters preferred
- Licensure: Colorado Special services license in School Social Work or eligibility to obtain this licensure within the first 9 months of hire.

Contract Days: Same as 9 month teacher contract

Compensation: Special Services Schedule

Job Description:
The School Health Professional (SHP) position is a full time School Social Worker whose primary responsibilities would be to work directly with students and staff at grades PreK-8 (and with limited contact at grades 9-12) to support five (5) key competencies (promising practices) that will contribute to positive:
SELF-AWARENESS: The ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior. The ability to accurately assess one’s strengths and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.”
SELF-MANAGEMENT: The ability to successfully regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations — effectively managing stress, controlling impulses, and motivating oneself. The ability to set and work toward personal and academic goals.
SOCIAL AWARENESS: The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The ability to understand social and ethical norms for behavior and to recognize family, school, and community resources and supports.
RELATIONSHIP SKILLS: The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. The ability to communicate clearly, listens well, cooperates with others, resists inappropriate social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively, and seek and offer help when needed.
RESPONSIBLE DECISION-MAKING: The ability to make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety concerns, and social norms. The realistic evaluation of consequences of various actions, and a consideration of the well-being of oneself and others.

Responsibilities:
- Create a learning environment characterized by acceptable student behavior and efficient use of time by preparing materials and planning and conducting activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time. Provide students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate while employing appropriate intervention strategies and practices to maintain student attention and order.
- Employ strategies and techniques during instruction to support all students.
- Collaborate with Aspen Family Resources center staff and related service staff to plan and coordinate appropriate services.
- As necessary, accommodate and modify instruction to meet the individual student’s needs.
- Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, clearly communicating instructional plans and objectives to colleagues.
- Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
- Participate, as appropriate, in the school’s Response to Intervention/Multi-Tiered Systems of Support process.
- Meet with parents and guardians as needed to discuss their children's progress, to determine their priorities for their children, and establish their resource needs for the purpose of involving them as partners in student learning.

Skills:
- Knowledge of the evidence based Life Skills Training (LST) to reduce the risks of alcohol and drug use, by targeting the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky behaviors.
- Teach students the necessary skills to resist social (peer) pressures to smoke, drink, and use drugs.
- Help students to develop greater self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Enable students to effectively cope with anxiety.
- Increase their knowledge of the immediate consequences of substance abuse.
- Enhance cognitive and behavioral competency to reduce and prevent a variety of health risk behaviors.

Expectations:
- The SHP will provide small group instruction (during regularly scheduled pull-out time) to introduce the above practices to grades K-8, the SHP would also provide targeted instruction to a small group of students at AHS who would benefit from this support.
- The SHP will work with our school counselors, psychologists and Aspen Family Connections Colorado Response team to address promising practices (Social Emotional Learning - SEL, and Social Emotional and Ethical Learning - SEEL) through direct student instruction regarding substance use and delinquent behavior by addressing: school engagement, improving knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about substance use reducing general substance use, reducing disruptive behaviors, and improving health-risk behaviors.

Personal Growth:
- The SHP will stay current with professional knowledge and technical skills through training opportunities and participation in relevant professional committees and organizations.
- Formulate goals that reflect the organization’s strategic theme and include specific, measurable outcomes instead of just completing activities.
- Demonstrate objective and measurable achievement of individual goals.
- Develops new goals when current goals have been achieved.

Working Conditions: Generally clean and comfortable work environment. Frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs. and may be required to lift over 50 lbs. based upon the assignment; management and de-escalation of
students with aggressive behaviors, frequent sitting, walking, kneeling, stooping, occasional climbing and crawling, constant standing, and repetitive motion.
