The Life Learning Academy (LLA) is a San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) charter high school founded in 1998 by the Delancey Street Foundation (DSF). Located on Treasure Island, it is designed for youth ages 14 to 18 who are involved or at-risk of involvement in the juvenile justice system and/or have challenging life issues. LLA's vision is to create a school whose environment includes: an extended family atmosphere that is rooted in community; cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding; respect for self and others; high expectations and standards for mental and emotional growth; use of the latest educational and technological tools and strategies; development of structure and a value system; and community service and reciprocal restitution.
Factors contributing to the uniqueness of LLA's program include: (1) the degree to which the students are involved in school management; (2) the ability to re-engage youths who were previously disconnected from school and community; and, (3) the project-based curriculum including actual in school entrepreneurial and career development programs such as a student-operated subscription service for foods grown in the LLA organic garden, and a junior police cadet program.
