Quality education has been a standard in the North Little Rock School District since the first school door opened in 1901. Since then, the district has grown to approximately 30 square miles with 20 schools serving just over 9,000 students - the sixth largest in Arkansas.
Along with growth in size and enrollment, the district has also grown in educational stature to become recognized as a leader in learning opportunities and student performance. To ensure individual student growth, school curriculum is broad in scope while emphasizing basic skills. All schools have earned accreditation status by the North Central Association. All schools meet and surpass Arkansas Education Standards.
North Little Rock Schools enjoy large city advantages in a small town atmosphere. With an approximate 65,000 population, the community is centrally located in Arkansas as part of the greater metropolitan area. Residents have access to an abundance of civic activities, opportunities for adult education and shopping conveniences.
With less than 10,000 students and more than 600 teachers, the North Little Rock School District is the smallest public school district in the metropolitan area, compared to the larger school systems in Little Rock and surrounding Pulaski County. Being smaller allows the North Little Rock School District to be more personal in its relationships with students, parents and staff members.
Superior teachers and a strong support staff are the most valuable assets in the North Little Rock schools. The professional staff reflects the high standards of the people who live in the community and place education as a top priority for children. In a vote of confidence, North Little Rock residents approved a school tax increase in 1989 to fund higher staff salaries, better facilities and increased bus transportation for students. Also, in 1992 and again in 1994 voters approved a ballot issue providing for new equipment, new instructional materials, as well as needed repairs at schools.
North Little Rock teachers believe that all students can learn -the vocational student, the college-bound student, the student with special gifts and the handicapped student. They recognize that each child has an individual learning pattern, and they encourage each to progress according to his or her best abilities. Careful appraisal, frequent evaluation and flexible grouping ensure that each student will receive instruction according to identified strengths and individual needs.
With an average annual salary exceeding $32,000, North Little Rock teacher salaries rank in the top three percent in the state. Nearly half of the staff members hold advanced certification and degrees. All principals, supervisors and teachers receive training in improving instructional techniques and classroom management. Extensive staff development opportunities are also offered. Media specialists, special education teachers and elementary teachers of gifted students complete specially developed management sessions.
Financial grants, recognition grants and honors awarded to teachers reflect the dedicated spirit of all professional staff members. In-the past ten years, four North Little Rock teachers have been named Arkansas Teacher of the Year, and two have been runners-up.
In addition to classroom teachers, the district also employs paraprofessional teaching aides, counselors, administrators, bus drivers, custodians, child nutrition personnel and other categories of employees. All are important to the district's commitment to providing appropriate learning opportunities for all students.
