Shelby County Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the following position(s):

Program Area Specialist (Special Ed)

Location: Special Services Center

Starting Date: Immediately

Additional Job Information: Special Education/Temporary position

Qualifications:
1. Special Education certification at the Class A level or above.
2. Alabama certificate for superintendent-principal, principal, or supervisor.
3. Five years teaching experience or work-related experience with students who are disabled.
4. Alternatives to the above may be considered if the Board deems it appropriate and acceptable.

Reports To: Special Education Coordinator

Supervises: All teachers in the designated exceptionality or as assigned.

Job Goal: To achieve and maintain standards of excellence in the delivery of special education services to ensure that each student involved may derive the greatest academic, vocational, and personal benefit from the learning experience.

Performance Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate the referral, evaluation, and placement of students referred to special education services.

2. Serve as a resource person to the regular classroom teacher who works with special education students.

3. Evaluate students using mental ability, achievement, and diagnostic tests when local school staff is not available to administer tests.

4. Interpret test results to parents and teachers.

5. Provide in-service training and workshops for local school personnel on topics relating to specific exceptionality.

6. Provide input when schedules are being decided and liaison work is needed.

7. Assist local schools in planning for the transportation of special education students.

8. Serve as a consultant on discipline matters involving special education students as requested.

9. Maintain all records and files in accordance with procedures established by the Special Education Department.

10. Assist in teacher evaluations as directed.

11. Help with the evaluation, selection, and distribution of textbooks and other materials related to special education as directed.

12. Keep informed about current trends and practices in the area of exceptionality and disseminate such information.

13. Provide classroom teachers with counsel and assistance toward the solution of problems related to special education as directed.

14. Maintain confidentiality of Board of Education business.

15. Be regular and punctual in attendance.

16. Perform such other tasks as may be assigned.

Terms of Employment: Ten-month or twelve-month contract. Pay according to proper placement on Program/Subject Area Specialists Salary Schedule. Exempt employee.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy.
