Shelby County Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the following position(s):

Program Area Specialist - Special Ed

Location: Special Services Center

Starting Date: Immediately

1. Valid teachers' certificate in the assigned area.
2. Master's degree in assigned area.
3. Five years exemplary experience as a teacher in the assigned curricular area. Experience preferred in the Shelby County School System.
4. Such alternatives as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports To: Coordinator or Supervisor in assigned area Assistant Superintendent of Instruction

Supervises: All teachers in the designated subject area

Job Goal: To help achieve and maintain standards of excellence in the assigned curricular area in order that each student exposed to the specific subject may derive the greatest academic and personal benefit from the learning experience.

Performance Responsibilities:
1. Observe, consult with, and assist individual classroom teachers in their instructional and classroom performance.

2. Assist in teacher evaluation as directed.

3. Assist when requested in the recruitment, orientation, and training of new teachers.

4. Participate in the leadership activities of professional development at the system, school, and individual levels.

5. Assist in the evaluation, development, and improvement of courses of study and instructional activities.

6. Assist in conducting research studies related to the instructional program and other areas of student activities and achievements.

7. Assist in the selection of books, audiovisual aids, and other instructional materials.

8. Keep abreast of new developments in the assigned area, and disseminate information about them to the teachers in the assigned curricular area.

9. Perform demonstration lessons with students in classroom situations for observation by teachers.

10. Work with Federal programs as requested and those projects in the assigned curricular area.

11. Assist the chairperson of the textbook selection committee for the assigned curricular area.

12. Prepare special reports, as required, on the status of regular and special programs in the assigned curricular area.

13. Coordinate activities with other Subject Area Specialists.

14. Be regular and punctual in attendance.

15. Work directly with individual students requiring special instructional help when requested by the classroom teacher and approved by the principal.

16. Assist and accept responsibility as assigned for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of special co-curricular activities such as math tournaments, science fairs, social studies fairs, art shows, etc.

17. Maintain confidentiality of any Board of Education related business.

18. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and/or Instruction Coordinator.

Terms of Employment: Twelve-month contract. Pay according to proper placement on Program/Subject Area Specialists Salary Schedule. Exempt employee.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy.
