Nome is located on the coast of the Bering Sea in Northwest Alaska. The area surrounding Nome ranges from sea level to 4,500 feet with rolling hills and low lying mountains. Arctic tundra produces a variety of plant life with berries, flowers, mosses, lichens, and many other miniature plants. The ground below the tundra is permanently frozen year-round, inhibiting the growth of trees.
Once known as Anvil City, Nome was established shortly after gold was discovered in 1898. Early in the 20th century, Nome's population grew to over 10,000 residents as a result of the gold rush. Today, Nome maintains a population of approximately 4,000 with an Alaska Native Eskimo representation (approx. 54%).
The Nome Public School District was established in 1901 and currently encompasses four schools.
* Nome Elementary School serves approximately 450 students from grades K - 6. Band, Physical Education, co-curricular after-school activities and Library/Technology classes are offered to all Nome children in addition to a strong standards-based academic program through the Nome Elementary School.
* Nome-Beltz Junior/Senior High School serves approximately 350 students. The Nome-Beltz complex maintains a 6-lane swimming pool, vocational workshops, computer labs and an extensive library in addition to its classrooms. Upon completion of the graduation requirements, students must pass the State of Alaska Qualifying Exam to obtain a high school diploma.
* The Leonhard Seppala High School offers an alternative high school option with school-to-work emphasis. Two session of classes (morning and afternoon) are held daily allowing the students to work for local employers outside of the school day.
* The Anvil City Science Academy is a charter school for students in grades five - eight (5-8) located adjacent to the Nome-Beltz complex. Anvil City Science Academy accommodates up to 40 students with an emphasis on science and technology.
