The mission of the Kuspuk School District is to cooperate with parents and guardians to graduate students who are confident and capable individuals whether living in the traditional culture or the global society. Kuspuk School District will focus energies, efforts, and resources toward enabling our students to demonstrate proficiency on the State Performance Assessments in reading, writing, and mathematics. Our graduates will: possess academic and technological skills that are marketable, communicate effectively, have pride in themselves and positive self esteem, and relate to others with appreciation and respect for differences, and become responsible citizens able to support themselves to be life long learners.
Kuspuk School District covers over 12,000 square miles. It includes eight villages accessible only by air and river travel. The villages are along the mid-Kuskokwim River from Lower Kalskag to Stony River 120 miles away. The school district offices are located in Aniak, which is about 320 miles west of Anchorage. Aniak is the hub of the region. Cold winters, with temperatures sometimes below -50¡ F, are offset by short summers when temperatures occasionally reach above 80¡F. The regional economy is based primarily on subsistence fishing, hunting, and gathering.
The area population is about 1,775 people. In most of the villages in our District, 90-98% of the residents are Yup'ik Eskimo. There are some Athabaskan Indians. It is estimated that native Alaskans have inhabited the region for at least five hundred generations. Much of the interior Native population was not directly contacted until the late nineteenth century when missions and schools were established along the mid-Kuskokwim River. The K-12 school population is about 470 students.
THE FIVE YEAR PLAN
Our District's mission statement and Five Year Plan were derived from the input received over the last nine years via a wide variety of different means. Our specific areas of focus for the next five years are: 1. Enabling our students to demonstrate proficiency on the State Performance Assessments in reading, writing, and mathematics. 2. Assisting our students in acquiring employability and other skills and the necessary character traits (e.g. punctuality, responsibility, manners, initiative, protocol) which would lead to our students achieving postsecondary success. 3. Familiarizing our students with computers and technologies as they relate to assisting in developing proficiencies in reading, writing, and mathematics, and as they relate to employability, school, and postsecondary success.
FOCUSING OUR EFFORTS
The Kuspuk School District is currently in its initial stages of reforming to a standards-based system of instruction and assessment. A Comprehensive Plan to Address Literacy is in place. This Plan includes assessing each student using a variety of means to diagnose an individual's literacy strengths and weaknesses and to then prescribe appropriate activities and strategies to address those needs by design, not by chance. This plan addresses literacy needs from children not yet in school through the K- 12 program. Similar efforts are currently being made in the development and implementation of a Plan to Address Numeracy.
Kuspuk School District seeks applicants who have had training or experience which enables them to be sensitive to the traditions and cultural backgrounds of our students.
Selecting quality educators is essential. We must make every effort to hire well qualified individuals of merit. It cannot be left to chance, with patronage, politics, favoritism, or familiarity edging out desired attributes.
Recruiting certified staff by using an organized system and a consistent interview process is costly, but it increases the likelihood that we obtain individuals who will have a positive impact on students and who will help in carrying out our District's mission. Every effort will be made to hire individuals who are endorsed in the specific area of their responsibility.
