System at a Glance
Atlanta Public Schools has an active enrollment of 55,000
students, attending a total of 91 schools:
65 elementary schools (K-5), two of which operate on a
year-round calendar while 41 offer extended-day programs;
16 middle schools (6-8),
10 high schools (9-12).
Seven of the high schools offer Magnet
Programs in Engineering and Applied Technology,
Communications, Science & Math, International Studies,
Performing Arts, Information Processing, Law & Government,
and Education Professions / Health / Human Services
Careers.
The school system also supports two alternative schools for
middle and/or high school students, two community schools, and
an adult learning center. APS schools are organized into
eleven vertical K-12 clusters, composed of one high school and
its feeder elementary and middle schools. Each of the
alternative schools relates to a high school, while the
community schools and adult learning center are extensions of
regular high school programs.
The system's 3,921 teachers make up 51 percent of APS staff
personnel. Forty-five (45) percent of all APS teachers have
advanced degrees. APS teachers have, on average, 15 years of
classroom experience.
